Our Halloween Book Pick: Don’t Tell Jenn

Dust jacket of Vow of the Eternal Night by Lily Crozier, featuring the book’s title and the main characters facing each other.

We chose a book! Yep, my coworker and I officially selected our Halloween read.

BUT before I reveal it, we have to make a deal.

You can’t tell Jenn.

I need you to pinky promise, swear on your mother’s favorite raccoon yard ornament that you won’t tell her.

Deal?

Cool. Cool cool cool. I trust you.

I’m going to hold you to your promise. You see, Jenn is a heavy reader with pretty discerning taste, plus she literally runs an English department. So obviously, she can’t know EVER.

And don’t forget, you swore on that raccoon.

So, about that book.

We ended up selecting…

Vow of the Eternal Night by Lily Crozier

Oh, you don’t recall that one on the list from the other day? Well, soooo… I kind of started in the middle of the story the other day. You see, I was actually left to my own devices for whole minutes at that bookstore before the nice book elf rescued me, and on that table were a couple of Halloween-y? Halloween-ie? books I took photos of to offer up to my coworker as reading suggestions. One of those was was Vow of Eternal Night. I actually took the photo as a joke, because, well, it looked… err… silly, and I kind of expected her to agree. Mmm hmm. I thought that. Bless my heart.

Remember how I said I don’t do horror as a genre? Well, I also don’t do romance. There have been a few times over the past couple of years when I’ve tried romantasies only to end up clutching my sides, seized up from having a full-blown fit of giggles – the same reaction I had as a grade-schooler seeing someone kiss on screen for the first time, except these books included some super-explicit narrative (and, quite frankly, laugh-inducing moments, where you wondered if the author had ever been in a physical relationship before. I digress, like I always do.) Anyway, enemies-to-lovers isn’t my thing. No offense to those who enjoy those novels or to the authors who do quite well writing them.

So, today we were sitting at lunch and decided to assign numbers to the books I mentioned before and have Google randomly choose one. Now, the Vow book wasn’t originally on the list, but I’d gotten enough feedback from those who read my blog on Mexican Gothic that we decided to swap that title out for the “joke” book. Sorry, Ms. Crozier. I mean that in the nicest way!

And of course, the randomizer chose that book.

Once again, we’ve chosen a book that will likely cause me to cringe. Apparently, I’m never going to get out of cringing during October.

So, again… Not a word to Jenn. I trust you.
